UNStudio joins forces with HPP Architects for high-rise development

In 2015, real estate development company Groß & Partner acquired a 16,000sqm site in central Frankfurt, formerly occupied by Deutsche Bank Offices. UNStudio were announced as winners of the subsequent international competition held to find a suitable design to revitalise the area. Their concept, called FOUR Frankfurt, will create a new landmark on the city skyline, with four 228m high-rise towers ascending from a multi-storey plinth. UNStudio have now formed a consortium with HPP Architects for the next phases of the project.

Despite its central location, the site has been inaccessible for the last 45 years. The development offers a welcome opportunity to create a new multi-use, vibrant inner-city quarter comprising 50% office spaces, 30% living accommodation (including subsidised housing), as well as retail spaces, restaurants and hotels. Joachim H. Faust, Managing Partner at HPP, commented: "FOUR Frankfurt condenses both the skyline and the urban fabric of Frankfurt with diverse opportunities for urban life."

In addition to the partnership with HPP, who have offices in Frankfurt, UNStudio have strengthened local ties by opening up a new headquarters in the Westend of the city. Ben van Berkel, UNStudio Founder and Principal Architect, commented: “A development with this level of urban effect is particularly timely, as Frankfurt is currently taking up an even bigger role on the European stage. To play a role in this urban transition is a fantastic opportunity for UNStudio and our new consortium partners HPP.”

FOUR Frankfurt is scheduled for completion in 2023.
