Winning consortium to create 461-hectare development

The results are in for the design competition held to find a concept for a new 461-hectare smart city neighbourhood in Rublyovo-Arkhangelskoye, situated to the west of Moscow. The winners were announced as Zaha Hadid Architects, Archea Associati and Nikken Sekkei. Each firm filled the brief to integrate the elements of this ambitious project, planned to house Moscow’s growing population and attract professionals from all over the world to its new business district.

In total, 4 million square metres of new buildings will be developed, with a third of the neighbourhood given over to parkland and a 30-hectare lake. Supported by the EDF group's platform for 3D simulations of energy and urban scenarios, the project will optimise the consumption and production of local energy sources while integrating electric transport and new technologies to create an efficient, connected city.

The Nikken Sekkei team, in a consortium with UNK Project, gave their concept the slogan “Interacting Town” to reflect a connection with both the natural world and smart-city technology. At the same time, a creative environment was fostered by the addition of numerous public spaces. Meanwhile, in a design entitled “Town of All Generations”, the Archea Associati team, working with ABD Architects, included comprehensive infrastructure in each quarter of the neighbourhood, with modern courtyard spaces in high-rise residential complexes. The Zaha Hadid Architects team, in a consortium with CPU Pride, proposed a town whose mission is to develop creativity and entrepreneurship. Their “Satellite Town” included three cores: a cultural area with art residences, an intellectual zone for urban solutions and year-round public spaces.

Competition organisers and developers JSC Rublyovo-Arkhangelskoye will continue to work with the winners in the upcoming design and construction phase.
