Seven high-quality projects recognised for enhancing the urban environment

Tenderstream member FCBStudios are celebrating a bumper year in the RIBA Regional Awards, with seven projects shortlisted for the 2023 edition. The message from the regional jury chairs is that the quality of architecture is extremely high, emphasising its role in enhancing people’s lives and the urban environment.

In London, FCBStudios have three shortlisted projects including Unity Place, which provides affordable and social housing for Brent Council’s South Kilburn regeneration scheme. The Battersea Exchange masterplan in Nine Elms creates 290 new homes, a new two-form entry primary school and around 4000 sqm of commercial space for shops, offices and restaurants, as well as a new entrance to Queenstown Road Station. In Hackney, the City of London Academy Shoreditch Park is designed as a single composition created from the school and the taller residential buildings within one block, linked by a common architectural language.

In the Southwest region, the retrofit and extension of University of Bristol’s Senate House provides a student hub and focus for the university’s Clifton Campus. The Roman Baths Clore Learning Centre and World Heritage Centre in Bath creates a new learning centre and publicly accessible heritage entre within a neighbouring group of nineteenth-century buildings, connected to the Roman baths through a vaulted undercroft beneath the street.

The Northwest category includes Manchester Metropolitan University’s School of Digital Arts, a new interdisciplinary learning environment that reflects the ubiquity of the screen in all our lives and will develop interdisciplinary talent to support Greater Manchester’s creative and digital industries. In the West Midlands, University of Warwick Faculty of Arts unites the Arts and Humanities Faculties in one building, fostering new collaborations in the heart of the University campus.

The buildings are now being assessed by regional juries, with the winning projects set to be announced later in spring.
