Stoss Lanscape Urbanism win with Loop + Stitch concept

In 2017, a competition was launched for the design of a greenway connecting St. Louis’s Forest park and iconic Gateway arch. Conducted by Great Rivers Greenway, the contest was led by architect Donald J. Stastny, FAIA, who commented that the new corridor would be a unique piece of urban infrastructure, saying: “As the ‘backbone’ of the central city, it will provide junctures for connections to communities, institutions, and natural resources in and around the core of St. Louis.” The winner has now been announced as Stoss Landscape Urbanism, a firm based in Boston and Los Angeles.

The winning concept is called Loop + The Stitch, embodying the designer's intention to promote connectivity and inclusion. The Loop links historic central sites around Washington University and Forest Park to downtown St. Louis and the Gateway Arch, while The Stitch joins neighbourhoods together and introduces visitors to the everyday life of the city. The route as a whole was conceived around a set of “social common denominators” shared by all, such as food, water and public space. It is hoped that increased connectivity between citizens will create new opportunities and social cohesion, as well as boosting the economy through job creation.

Chris Reed, Founder and Director of Stoss, stated: "On behalf of our entire team, we are thrilled to be selected for the Chouteau Greenway project — an incredible initiative for St. Louis that looks to knit together the city’s well-known destinations with neighborhoods, workplaces, and institutions East to West, and North to South. We look forward to working with Great Rivers Greenway, its incredible partners, the City, and with all the stakeholders and citizens of St. Louis in the coming weeks and months to craft and refine a strategy for engaging everyone in the future of this greenway."
