Five teams selected to compete for Thames development

RIBA have announced the shortlist in an international competition seeking architect-led teams for a mixed use scheme at Twickenham Riverside. The local authorities teamed up with RIBA to find innovative multi-disciplinary design teams to work with them in developing a key waterfront site in a much-loved part of the historic town. Five teams have now been selected to proceed to the next phase of the competition.

The shortlisted teams are:
• Allies and Morrison
• Baynes and Mitchell Architects
• Cullinan Studio
• Haworth Tompkins
• Hopkins Architects

The area surrounding the site is a mixture of residential and commercial developments, all of which fall within a conservation area. The new scheme has the potential to transform the town and make a major contribution to its quality of life and economic success.

Following the announcement, Gareth Roberts, Leader of Richmond Council, said: “For nearly 40 years this beautiful stretch of the River Thames has been awaiting a design that can showcase the riverside as a destination for people to live, play, work, enjoy and thrive. The interest in the competition from such a wide number of companies proves that there was an appetite from the industry to help create an exciting and energising development and there is a clear opportunity for a firm to leave their mark.”
