High-quality entries from 98 teams sees selection increased from five to six

In February, the University College Dublin’s Future Campus International Design Competition was launched to find an urban vision for the 24 ha campus, together with concepts for a new 8,000 sqm Centre for Creative Design. Today, University College Dublin and competition organisers Malcolm Reading Consultants revealed the shortlist, which was expanded from five to six teams in recognition of the extensive response from 98 teams across 28 countries.

The winners were unanimously chosen by a panel chaired by Professor Andrew J. Deeks, President of University College Dublin. The teams, whose submissions scored highest based on criteria including experience and team composition, are as follows:
• Diller Scofidio + Renfro (US)
• John Ronan Architects (US)
• O’Donnell + Tuomey (Ireland)
• Steven Holl Architects (US)
• Studio Libeskind (US)
• UNStudio (Netherlands)

The University is the country’s largest and most internationally-engaged higher education body, known as Ireland’s Global University for its popularity among international students. Malcolm Reading, Competition Director, commented: “The leading universities now compete across national boundaries, and University College Dublin has shown great imagination and initiative in searching globally for an outstanding design team.”

The finalists now have around ten weeks to draw up their visions for a welcoming campus entrance precinct and the €48m Centre for Creative Design, creating a stronger physical presence and identity for the University within Dublin. Professor Deeks stated: “The competition affords us a rare moment, to transform the campus in a way that promotes a strong sense of community and inspires students and faculty, visitors and local innovators to explore new ways of learning and thinking.”

The competition winner announcement is anticipated to take place in August 2018.
