Grimshaw-led design team to transform Australian trail tourist attractions

Tenderstream member Grimshaw and ASPECT Studios, in partnership with the Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation, are designing the Coastal Works for the Twelve Apostles Precinct Redevelopment Project in Geelong, Australia. The project is part of the AU$500 million Geelong City Deal – a 10-year partnership between the Australian and Victorian governments and the City of Greater Geelong to revitalise the city and unlock the potential of the visitor economy along the Great Ocean Road, an Australian National Heritage listed 150-mile stretch of road running along the country’s south-eastern coast.

The coastal works will improve or build new coastal attractions and walking trails, including revegetation and safety improvements, upgraded visitor lookouts and an all-weather amphitheatre, a new bike and walking trail, two new lookouts, and a new transit pod to support sustainable transport within the Precinct. Grimshaw partner, Andrew Perez, stated: “At Grimshaw, we’re honoured to be leading a team that is designing a sustainable and regenerative future for the Twelve Apostles Precinct, and we’re excited to help realise such an important project for the local region and state of Victoria. The Twelve Apostles Precinct is an iconic environmental destination which must be protected and celebrated for future generations.”

The development of the design has been driven by a strong and reciprocal working relationship with the Eastern Maar people Matthew Mackay, Studio Director at ASPECT Studios, said collaboration was central to the design’s success, saying: “The ASPECT Studios’ team is privileged to be co-designing new, world-class facilities within one of Australia’s most important cultural landscapes. Our partnership with the Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation will be key in realising a remarkable, enriched experience of the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge in the future.”

Grimshaw will manage the team of design experts to move the Coastal Works project vision into concept designs for community feedback later this year.
