Progress on major transport link for France’s third largest city
As part of a consortium led by Egis, Tenderstream member Grimshaw, Atelier Schall and landscape architects Gautier+Conquet have been appointed by transport authority SYTRAL to the Tramway Express de l’Ouest Lyonnais (TEOL) project in Lyon. This major new public transport link will extend the city’s T2 tramway with two underground stations and three tram stations, supporting over 55,000 passenger journeys a day when it opens in 2032.
The TEOL aims to link the west of the metropolis to its central district. Numerous connections available at the Perrache and Jean Macé stations will promote intramodality, enabling efficient services throughout the metropolitan area. New infrastructure between the Confluence and Alaï area will provide a service frequency of 5 minutes between trams during peak hours. The project also includes a complete redevelopment of the public spaces it traverses, improving the living environment and developing routes for cyclists and pedestrians.
A high level of technical expertise is required for the design, with the tunnel featuring an 8% gradient set within a complex geotechnical and hydrogeological context. Egis is the lead engineer, overseeing all phases of the design and construction, and working with Grimshaw on the design for the Charcot-Provinces station. Atelier Schall will complete the design for Point du Jour station, while Gautier+Conquet will focus on above-ground developments.
Alice Barrois, principal at Grimshaw, stated: ‘Working with Sytral and the Egis consortium on TEOL, we will contribute to this enhancement of Lyon’s transport network – integrating an essential high performance infrastructure system but also providing journey and destination points that inherently connect to the city and create passenger journeys that are humanised, safe, sustainable and intuitive.’
