Moxon Architects create dynamic design to connect communities

Tenderstream members Moxon Architects have shared the first images of a proposed new pedestrian and cycle bridge across the River Taff in Cardiff, which goes into planning this spring. Moxon is working on the bridge with co-designer Arcadis for Cardiff Council as part of the Grangetown Channel View redevelopment. The architects hope the bridge will deliver a new landmark and attraction for the area, while providing an important connection between communities.

The Channel View Estate is a strong and vibrant neighourhood at the very heart of the city’s Grangetown district. Cardiff Council is redeveloping this estate by replacing the existing 180 properties - including the current 1970s high rise tower block - with up to 400 new homes. The bridge will connect Channel View and surrounding areas to Hamadryad Park, improving access for residents on both sides of the river to schools and leisure facilities. Links will also be established within the wider walking and cycling network, including the Cardiff Bay and Ely Trails.

The distinctive design responds to the river bend with a dynamic, asymmetric span configuration. Steel girders run above and below deck with fluidity, and the deck flares at its apex to incorporate generous viewing platforms. Combining dynamic views and a distinctive silhouette, the 6m wide bridge has a relatively small footprint to reduce riverbank impact. As the banks on each side are of different heights, the design features three supports in the river so the journey across is not too steep. There are no steps, and the incline gently ramps up with resting places along the way. The S-shaped design adds interest, while the sleekly-designed structural elements are located below deck.

Depending on the outcome of the planning process, construction works may commence in 2026/2027 and are expected to take approximately 18-24 months.
