Populous create state-of-the-art training facility for the Mustangs team

The John Madden Football Center, designed by Tenderstream member Populous, has opened at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. The 35,000 sq ft training facility is named for coach, iconic broadcaster, and Cal Poly alumnus John Madden. Designed in partnership with the Madden family, the facility creates a centralised home for the university's  Mustang football team that connects the programme’s history, people, and future. Located at the south end of Spanos Stadium, the centre sits adjacent to Mustang Memorial Plaza, which honours players and coaches lost in a plane crash in 1960.

The facility’s indoor and outdoor spaces work together to support training, recovery and daily student-athlete life, creating a people-first environment that echoes Madden’s approach to the game. A covered terrace next to the student-athlete lounge overlooks the field and offers a flexible space for recovery and team gatherings. A detached weight room expands training opportunities, while outdoor hydrotherapy areas free up interior space for other needs.

Collaboration and connection are woven throughout the building’s design. The Couch Family Terrace creates a unique indoor-outdoor experience and complements an open-office environment that encourages interaction among coaches, staff, and student-athletes. Among the facility’s signature spaces is a 130-seat team room featuring state-of-the-art presentation capabilities.

“John Madden is an iconic figure who taught the game of football to millions of people around the world, from his time as a player at Cal Poly and coach in the NFL to his memorable and straightforward broadcasting style,” said Michael Lockwood, senior principal at Populous and a Cal Poly alum. “We wanted to design a facility to honour Coach Madden’s spirit: bold, intentional, transparent and communicative. Every square inch of the building works hard to maximize the potential of coaches, players and staff.”
