Future-ready aviation hub set to serve 12 million passengers per year
Domestic and cargo operations have begun at Noida International Airport (NIA), designed by Tenderstream member Grimshaw in collaboration with the Nordic Office of Architecture Norway and Haptic Architects. With Phase 1 of the airport designed to serve 12m passengers annually, NIA has been developed as a future-ready aviation hub with a strong focus on customer service, operational efficiency, digital innovation, and sustainability. The airport is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing regional connectivity and contributing to economic growth across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Northern India.
The overall design of the terminal merges Swiss efficiency and Indian hospitality, with an aim to provide a seamless passenger experience. The architectural language is rooted in local culture, with a sense of place established through the inclusion of landscaped courtyards, an abundance of daylight, and operations to optimise energy-efficient systems. The flights of stairs at the terminal forecourt are reminiscent of the famous sacred riverfront steps or ghats of Varanasi, while intricate ornamental lattice screens evoke the look and feel of traditional haveli townhouses. Generous roof heights and a courtyard space after security create a welcoming environment, complemented by curated art installations and intuitive wayfinding. Energy demand is minimised through a combination of intelligently integrated passive design elements that are responsive to the local climate and that anticipate human behaviour.
Following its inauguration by the Prime Minister on 28th March, the airport has completed trials to ensure that systems, processes, and teams are prepared to deliver safe and efficient operations. IndiGo became the first airline to operate from the airport, with the inaugural flight arriving from Lucknow on 15th June.
Christoph Schnellmann, vice chairman of Noida International Airport, stated: "From the outset, our focus has been on creating an airport that combines operational excellence with an outstanding customer experience. We’re excited that IndiGo has launched operations at the airport today, and we look forward to providing passengers with a smooth, hassle-free experience in an airport that reflects the hospitality, culture and character of this region."
