The highly-acclaimed Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has joined forces with top Hong Kong venue Hotel ICON to launch a "Room of the Future Design Competition".
Professional and young architects, architecture studios and other business in the industry - as well as design students from tertiary education institutions from around the world -are invited to submit their design proposals individually or as a team.
And the winning designer will spend a month in London at Conran and Partners' studios at Shad Thames. During the internship Conran and Partners' associate director Tina Norden will mentor them and help them see their design become a reality.
The "Tomorrow's Guestrooms Design Competition 2014 - The Room of the Future" will be held from 1 September 1 to December 31.
Richard Hatter, co-chairman of the competition and the general manager of the award-winning 262-bedroom Hotel ICON, said: "We are looking for the design of the room for the future within the confines of a typical Hotel ICON room and are keen to see what the designers of today and tomorrow think it may be."
Hotel ICON is located in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui East overlooking Hong Kong's magnificent city skyline and Victoria Harbour.
Standing as a stylish testament to Hong Kong's creative energy and vibrant arts scene it is the vision of some of the finest and inspired designers on the planet showcasing their work.
Richard Hatter added: "It's about balance between managing the cool factor and comfort."
The aim is to transform one of the Tomorrow's Guestrooms at Hotel ICON and to showcase their vision of hotel room design for guests of the future.
Entries will be reviewed by an expert panel, and will be judged on functionality in design and creativity in implementation.
Conran and Partners, founded by Sir Terence Conran, has a history of successful collaboration with Hotel ICON and its designers were involved in creating its three highly-acclaimed restaurants.
Tina Norden is an associate director of Conran and Partners and the designer behind Hotel ICON and many other acclaimed hotel and restaurant projects around the world.
Her team at Conran and Partners created ‘Above & Beyond', the sleek-and-chic private members' facility on Level 28, and The Market, a fantastic open-plan restaurant offering a tempting selection of pan-Asian and Western favourites.
She welcomes the Room of the Future competition saying: "Hotel ICON is a true symbol of Hong Kong's dynamic design talent and expanding arts scene.
"When we were involved in the original project more than three years ago, it was a fabulous opportunity to collaborate with award-winning artists, creative visionaries and the most respected designers that Hong Kong had to offer.
"We are very much looking forward to continuing this creative process by collaborating with and inviting the competition winner to our London studio."
The competition is an initiative from the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) at PolyU. The school is a world-leading provider of hospitality and tourism education.
