Summary Urban Design competition
Description The City of Heidelberg an open two-phase competition for the restructuring and reorganization of the riverbank of the Neckar and Heidelberger Old Town Square.
The first phase will be handled as part of an urban design.
The second phase takes place as part realization with 15-25 participants.
The goal of the competition is the redesign of the Neckar riverbank in the old part of the city of Heidelberg. The competition area is about 2 km long and covers an area of about 11 ha. The outcome of the competition will be a draft of the redesign of the area between the old town and river. The realization of the competition includes the implementation of the concept for two deeper areas, the area around the Old Bridge and the Town Hall / Jubilee Square. Under the heading of "city on the River Heidelberg has the entire strategy of improved links between the city and river. The site quality of a city on the river at the transition of Odenwald in the Upper Rhine Valley will be more reflected. The Neckar is meant to be a public space so needs experience to be upgraded. Along the river banks there will be many foot and cycle paths. In addition to this the town is serviced by the Neckar road (B37) with approximately 20,000 vehicles daily and the river bank area is heavily disrupted. There are plans to have a tunnel between the Neckarufer Birmarckplatz / Theodor-Heuss bridge and Karlstor to relieve the heavy traffic.
