Mecanoo and Metaform win with compact green design

Dutch architecture firm Mecanoo and Luxembourg-based design practice Metaform Architects have won an international design competition for the Mondorf-les-Bains Velodrome and Sports Complex. Situated in rolling countryside on the outskirts of town, the velodrome will host both national and international cycling events. The new complex will also feature an aquatic center, multisport hall and climbing wall, creating a hub to serve the local community together with students from a future international school, planned for an adjacent site.

An important feature of the concept is the commitment to optimal energy use. Throughout the facility, skylights and glazed facades make the most of natural daylight, while green roofs, passive solar design, and photovoltaic roof panels contribute to the sustainable approach.

The compact design was informed by the prescribed re-naturalisation of the sloping agricultural site, combined with the restrictions imposed by a limited budget. In order to blend seamlessly with the landscape, the pools and sports hall are sunken into the ground under sloping green roofs. This approach puts the focus on the velodrome as the site’s most recognisable landmark, clearly displaying its elegantly engineered timber frame. Visible from the neighbouring highway, the building appears as a floating structure with a transparent band separating the solid volume of the roof from its surroundings. Wood and concrete finishes create a neutral and warm backdrop to the complex.

Internally, the layout connects the facilities through a grand foyer, while maintaining free circulation for both athletes and spectators. The sporting areas are accessed through changing rooms located on the ground floor. A large open staircase connects the public foyer on the first floor with the entrance, creating a clear path to the aquatic centre and spectator space. In addition to sports activities, restaurants will provide visitors with access to meeting and waiting areas, including outdoor terraces where they can enjoy the views.
