Underground development concept revealed

In 2017, a call went out for designers to deliver the new Zhejiang World Trade Centre in Hangzhou. Leigh & Orange have now been appointed for the 79,250 sqm primarily underground development, which includes 24,700 sqm of new commercial space.

The original centre was established in 1987 during the early phase of the Chinese economic reforms, and was designed as a key venue to facilitate foreign trade. The new scheme is a transit oriented development, or TOD, helping to rezone existing clusters comprised of hotels, offices and convention centres and acting as a commercial catalyst for the business community. To facilitate this plan, the basement retail space will be connected to the metro, forming a public gathering space and focal point for the surrounding community.

Central to the scheme is the concept of a retail park with an indoor arcade and an outdoor park. The retailers will include a sports-themed concept store and a major flagship book shop.

Kelvin Li, L&O’s Project Director said: “L&O is honoured to be working on what is a very prominent scheme which will help shape the future of Hangzhou’s Huanglong district. With the upcoming 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, we hope to work hand-in-hand with Hangzhou Metro to transform this into a world class mixed-used facility.”
