Mountain resort development results revealed

In 2017, the Municipality of Samokov celebrated the 120-year anniverary of the foundation of Borovets, the oldest mountain resort in Bulgaria. To commemorate this event, the town authorities joined together with the Bulgarian Chamber of Architects, the Union of Architects and the Union of Urbanists to organise an international architectural competition for a new development situated in the resort's centre.

The competition attracted 40 projects from 17 countries, with the winner receiving the right to negotiate for the technical design. The results have now been announced as follows:
First place - William Matthews Associates Ltd from the United Kingdom in collaboration with Stephen George International Bulgaria
Second place - A.D.A. Ltd., Bulgaria
Third place - Project Vitae Ltd., Bulgaria
The two honorable prizes for 4th and 5th place go to Urban Planing Institute from Bulgaria and Critical Design Studio from Turkey.

In the invitation to the competition, Vladimir Georgiev, Mayor of Samokov, stated: "Today, when Borovets celebrates its 120th anniversary, we look ahead to the prospects for development. The desire of the municipality and the inhabitants of the region is to build on the rich resort tradition and to strengthen its position as a top modern international mountain destination." The jury praised the first-placed designers for their response to this brief, which they felt respected the beauty of the surrounding landscape while offering inviting resort facilities. They also singled out the proposal's safe semi-covered ski, bicycle and pedestrian connections enabling good connectivity for people travelling through the development. The scheme will include retail spaces, an information centre, sport and recreation areas, underground parking and spaces for exhibitions and events.
