Expo centre upgrade to spark city centre redevelopment

The winning team has been announced in an international design competition for the reconstruction of the exhibition and conference centre in Thessaloniki, Greece, which is intended to spark the redevelopment of a prominent part of the city centre. Following a three-day meeting attended by contest jury members, first place was awarded to the team comprised of of Sauerbruch Hutton, Tenderstream member Gustafson Porter + Bowman and Elena Stavropoulou.

Fifteen design teams passed the prequalification stage, with participating firms part of teams through to the design phase including Tenderstream members Studio Seilern Architects, OMA Stedebouw, Wilkinson Eyre Architects and Grant associates, with UNStudio one of the team members taking third place. All fifteen design proposals will be presented at the Exhibition and Conference centre during the 85th Thessaloniki International Fair, when the three prizes will be awarded in a special ceremony. 

The contest site of the TIF‐HELEXPO Fairgrounds is situated in the heart of Thessaloniki within the central and the south-eastern part of the city, occupying an area of approximately 175,000 sq m.  The completion brief called for a design with a strong identity that respects environmental parameters and contributes to sustainable development. One of the main project goals is to stimulate the redevelopment of a prominent part of the city centre, contributing to the transformation of Thessaloniki into one of the top, forward-looking cities of Europe and a leading international business hub and tourist destination.
