Collaborative approach set to create coherent vision for major transport hub

Tenderstream members KAAN Architecten and Benthem Crouwel are among the firms selected to work as in-house architects for Schiphol airport, which is implementing an upcoming investment plan over the coming years. The long-term collaboration between the appointed teams is expected to contribute to design consistency, an improved traveller experience, efficiency, and cost optimisation across various planned redevelopment projects.

Schiphol was originally designed as a ‘one terminal airport’, featuring a compact, well-organised layout that resulted in short check-in and transfer times. With a growth in passenger numbers, the simplicity and distinct identity that characterised Schiphol’s design DNA have faded into the background. A unified design vision is required to ensure Schiphol retains a coherent, recognisable look. The focus is on traveller experience, functionality and quality, while at the same time considering costs, maintenance, modular construction and sustainability.

KAAN Architecten, as lead architect, will create the overarching vision, set to serve as a guideline for future designs. Beacon (Benthem Crouwel Architects and NACO) will act as the airport consultant, supporting the teams with technical and airport-specific expertise. LVZJA (Luis Vidal + architects and ZJA) will design the plaza, lounges, piers, gates, walkways, landside passenger areas and parking, while Paul de Ruiter Architects will be responsible for the departure area, baggage halls, security and customs screening.

Arthur Reijnhart, Chief Commercial Officer at Royal Schiphol Group, stated, “Our aim is to gradually restore Schiphol to its position among the top three European hub airports in terms of quality. In doing so, we are placing the needs of our travellers at the heart of everything we do…Schiphol will once again become clear and recognisable through greater consistency and a distinct design style. In this way, we’ll make Schiphol feel like a home for world travellers.”
